Newborn posing, and safety in session

Like every genre today, 'fads' come and go; newborn photography is no exception. The issue with some of these fads is that some of the poses require very delicate handling of a newborn, particular props or even composite shots to achieve the required outcome. For those that do not know, a composite shot is when baby and/or prop is shot at different times, then those separate images are compiled to create the outcome- often an image that implies baby is able to support their own weight, or hanging in a way that no safe photographer would actually allow the baby to be left in own their own. How do newborn photographers learn these poses? There is no 'degree' in newborn posing and photography that I am aware of- however, these days the resources to photographers is growing and rapidly becoming available online. YouTube, special online 'retreats' (The Newborn Retreat by The Milky Way), and for those dedicated photographers, mentor-ship is available in certain cities at certain times of the year (think Kelly Brown, Rachael Vanoven, Kathy V and so many others!). Hands on learning is not always available, and often watching, whether in person or online, is a frequent method of learning this art. The aids of specialty built dolls (Stand in Baby) have just started appearing, otherwise stealing your daughters dolly and using it to practice wrapping is a common tool. :) The point is, every photographer should be approaching newborn posing with caution. If you are a client, wanting a particular pose, send through an example to your photographer well BEFORE your session, or preferably during enquiry stage to see if they accommodate this pose. A safe photographer will not guarantee a pose, as each baby is unto their own; some are better on their back, some on their side, or some on their tummy. An industry experienced photographer will have a work flow in mind, but will always be willing to compromise and work with the flow of baby, should they show signs of being unsettled.
